VIDEO: Turning Waking Art Into Real Art – Mixed Media Abstract Art

Have you ever woken up with a picture in your head of a project you really need to do? Well, this happened to me yesterday. I woke with a really clear image in my head, this waking art just popped into my head as I became aware of the new day and started to open my eyes. But it wasn’t just an image it was a feeling too, you know when you wake up and the images and feelings are all merged together as one? I couldn’t hold onto the feelings, they soon vanished back into the dream world, but the image was still there and I tried to turn it into something real and you can watch me do that in my video today.

It is a very mixed media piece with gouache and watercolor paint, acrylic ink and collage. So go grab a tea or coffee and watch my waking art turn into real art!

VIDEO: Watercolor and Ink Flower Drawing

Watercolor and ink flower drawing and how to add more texture. Video by Kim Dellow

How have you been getting on with your Inktober sketching? If you follow me on Instagram or you are part of my Creative Tips newsletter group then you will know that I’ve been doing a sketch per day and sharing as part of Inktober. I’ve really been doing my own thing and not following the official prompts but using it to generate sketch ideas, play with different styles and practice of course!

I have plans to work up some of my favourite sketches into other projects and I was hoping to encourage you to do the same thing. So today’s video share is a process video for a watercolor and ink flower drawing that comes from my Day 18 sketch. I’m also testing out the Daniel Smith watercolor paints and if you scroll down below you can see a close up of the granulation you get with some of these watercolor paints, You can spot it in the picture above as well.

Anyway, enjoy the video and you will see what I mean about granulation once you have watched it! Oh and I share how to add the punchinella texture too!

VIDEO: How to Use Watercolor paint and Indian Ink on Yupo

Techniques for using watercolor on Yupo, video by Kim Dellow

If you watched my video last week then you would have seen that I was playing around with Yupo as one of the surfaces I was testing Distress Oxides on. It was such fun to be using the synthetic paper again, I hadn’t used it for such a long time before last week, that I wanted to play with it some more. So here is another video with it and this time I am using it with watercolor paints and Indian ink and sharing the results and some tips on using it with these materials too.

I really love the textures you can get with Yupo and the way it makes the paint look bright and vivid. Have you been using ti? What materials have you tried with it and what do you enjoy doing with it? Or perhaps you haven’t tried it yet? After seeing these videos do you think that you will?

I do have some other project ideas for using Yupo that I made for when I was working for Blitsy, like a resist technique to use on Yupo with watercolor and alcohol inks or the step by step for making Galaxy Art on Yupo with acrylic paint. So give them all a go and let me know how you get on, you will find my social media links below so do link me in when you share your results on social media as I would love to see them!

Scroll down for a close up picture of the texture in this project.

VIDEO: Easy Watercolour Rainbow background And Flower Art

Make this easy watercolor rainbow background, see how in the video by Kim Dellow

After last week’s Autumnal journal page I thought I would jump straight back into Summer with a rainbow watercolor background and some flower art. I think I can not quite let go of the idea of Summer sun! I know, we have to move on with the season but it doesn’t hurt to have a quick look back from time to time does it? Well this look back comes with a really easy technique for adding your own watercolor rainbows to your next painting or art journal project.

I am also trying out absorbent grounds this week and seeing how they work with the Hydrus watercolors. But don’t worry if you don’t have either because I share some tips on what else you can use to make this watercolor rainbow background.

VIDEO: Easy watercolor mixed media flower art

Try this easy watercolor mixed media flower art project with video by Kim Dellow.

Watercolor and gel medium don’t mix, right? Well, oddly enough I love working with gel medium and watercolor together, you just get the most amazing textures and effects. Take for instance my video this week. It’s a super easy, mixed media flower art tutorial that uses glass bead gel and watercolor. I know, crazy! But look how much fun it is! And all that amazing texture.

But I have a confession, I made a totally rookie mistake! Got a bit too excited and threw caution to the wind when I really should have been patient and waited. Be patient? Yeah, that word is so not in my vocabulary! Anyway, I won’t spoil the fun, you can watch what mistake I made and how I fixed it too in the video!

Before we start the video, go grab your popcorn, or maybe that should be go grab your paper and paints! Because, I just wanted to let you know that at the end I have a special shout out to one of my YouTube channel subscribers!

Hey Guys, how are you all doing? Are you have a lovely creative week? I do hope you are and if you are looking for some inspiration to get you fired up and ready for some painting fun or for a bit of art journal creating then I have a watercolor project video to share with you today that might be just what you are looking for.

But I am doubly excited to share this project with you today as it uses some of Tracy Evans new stamps with AALL And Create. I’ve known Tracy for years via blogging and design teams, which by the way is one of the things that I love about this job, you do get to meet some lovely people, like Tracy. I am excited to see her starting on this new art venture, so when I saw these fab stamps I knew I had to play with them. She has two stamp sets at the moment, this gorgeous one with the birds and sentiments and a grungy circle, heart and star set which is also right up my street!

So in my video today I’m covering lots techniques: from how to stamp on watercolor paper to layering and adding texture with watercolor. Sit back and enjoy!

VIDEO: Using Stencils With Watercolours in Your Art Journal Or Sketchbook

Sketchbook or art journaling with stencils and watercolour by Kim Dellow

My video share today is all about using stencils and watercolours. I really enjoy using watercolours with stencils and today’s video shares a fun technique you might want to try out. I’ve gone for a very stylised, almost illustrative look with my design today, because I am really loving that look at the moment, but you can adapt the techniques to other styles too and use them in your art journal or your sketchbook.

I’ve used two stencils from StencilGirl, the lovely feathers designed by Rae Missigman and matched them up with one of my own DIY stencils that I made based on a Moroccan tile design. I think the three designs work really well together, what do you think?

There are lots of tips in the video as well as how to correct mistakes with watercolours! Oops!

More Ideas Using Watercolours and Stencils

I have some other techniques for using watercolour and stencils. Do you remember the textured and layered art journal page that I made using the products I designed for PaperArtsy? Well that page was started with a stencil and watercolour technique, one of my favourites actually.

Then there was a tutorial I wrote for Blitsy on how to make your on journaling cards using watercolours and stencils too. That was fun!

Click on the photos to see other tutorials using stencils and watercolours:

Click to see video on how to make a layered watercolour Art Journal pageClick through to tutorial on how to make your own watercolour journaling cards

So what is your favourite technique for using watercolours with stencils?
