Show Your Face – Head Positions

Friday is here once again and time for a new set of face shares. If you have been playing along with June Walker’s prompt suggestion this month I hope you have been having fun, if you haven’t had a chance then you can always save it up for when you have some time!

My Share This Week…

Sketches of head selfie head positions by Kim Dellow

For my share this week I thought I would carry on with my pencil sketch studies from last week but I wanted to work from a model and not having a model to hand I thought I would take some selfies and work from them!

Mmm, not sure I have hit all the angles quite right, particularly the foreshortening of the middle photo. But now I have a series of photos to work from for practise.

Over To You…

Link your faces artwork and spread the word on your blog and/or social media, hashtag #ShowYourFaceFriday. Please do let anyone you think would be interested in sharing their portraits know about our community here.

Catch you later Face-Artinators

My Share This Week…

I’m really glad that June suggested head positions for this month’s prompt. I haven’t really tried other views of the face than front, 3/4 or profile yet, so this prompt has given me a great excuse to push beyond my comfort zones a bit. This is very much a work in progress and just a bit of practice, I have no finished piece to show yet. I think I need more practice before I am happy to go further, but it is a start!

Kim Dellow face sketch in ball point pen on crackle paint

My share this week is a ball point pen sketch over crackle paint, unfortunately I don’t remember whose crackle paint it is! I think it might be DecoArt Media. It is a tester page in my Junk Journal and I used a copper acrylic paint glaze over the top of the crackle.

My Share This Week…

A mixed media portrait sketch by Kim Dellow

I’ve just started going to my first ever formal art course, well since school that is and I don’t really count school as it was so very, very (very) long ago and I actually dropped art as soon as I was able to, but that is another story for a different time. So I am counting this course as my first formal art course. It is run by my local council and is all about portraiture and emotion, sounds good doesn’t it?

The second class was this week and we had a sitter to draw from, which was fun. We spent the class working to different set timed poses, 1min, 5min, 10min, 15min and 30min. This one was the 30 minute pose but I actually did a couple of sketches in that time so it was more like a 15min sketch. I’ve used watercolour, a water soluble graphite pencil and a charcoal pencil for this piece.

Have you been to any in real life portrait classes? If you have, what lessons did you learn from them, either positive or negative, that you are still using to make your art today?

My Share This Week…

A paint pen face

I was flicking through my junk journals recently and I stumbled across this face that I did last year using paint pens. The odd thing is is that I think it was inspired by someone or something I had seen but I never wrote the inspiration down so now it is only a feeling and I have no recollection of what or why I did it.

My Share This Week…

My Show Your Face share this week is a quick sketch in my junk journal in pen. The page already had some gesso and ink stains from a previous project and to pop her off the page a gave her a squiggly Afro hair. As I was doing it I realised that I had missed a trick and should have done her hair with writing instead of squiggles, perhaps I will try that next time.

My Share This Week…

Show Your Face geometric art journal page

Ok, so another partially hidden face! I seem to be in a partial face theme at the moment. I thought I would match up my face with some stamping this week. There is a reason, I’m in the middle of preparing for my PaperArtsy demos and Make and Takes at the Craft show in Alexandra Palace this weekend so it seemed natural to throw in some stamping on my face this week.

The face is sketched with a Sakura Pigma Micron pen then for the stamping I have used one of my own stamps from the PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Kim Dellow} 01 set, a stamp from the PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Emma Godfrey} 15 set, one from the PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Everything Art} 01, one from PaperArtsy Hot Pick 1604 and a couple from PaperArtsy Hot Pick 1602.

See I packed them in but then I did have to get my stamping practice on for the weekend! The paint is all PaperArtsy Fresco Finish acrylics by the way and I’m working in one of my junk journals which I will be taking with me for the show if you happen to be going and want a closer look!

My Share This Week…

I’m calling this week’s face ‘Beard and Glasses’! It is a man’s face, in case you weren’t sure 🙂 and is quite a loose piece. Done really quickly with gouache and a brush. I kind of thought it would be fun to do a man for a change and to just be relaxed about the features. It kind of frees you up if you try not to worry about it too much!

Show Your Face

Hey lovely Facers, I hope you have had a good week full  of Faces. We are almost in March which means there will be an optional prompt running from next week. As always you don’t have to use the prompt but it is a good way to push yourself out of your comfort zone and also as it is an ‘Inspired by’ prompt you can spread a bit of love for other artists you admire.

Anyway on with this week’s share!

First up the admin…

Schedule:

  • Inspired By – March 2016 (pick fellow Facers to inspire our work this month)
  • Head Positions – May 2016 (try different head potions through the month. Suggested by June Walker)
  •  Quick Draw Faces – July 2016 (set a timer to say 10-15 min – or less if you dare! – and draw a face or several faces in that time. Suggested by Gibby Frogett).
  • Change Hands – September 2016 (try using your non-dominant hand to draw/ paint / make your face this month. Suggested by Hazel Agnew).

Feel free to let me know if you have any more themes or ideas for Show Your Face.

Don’t forget:

  • Show Your Face is a community link up for portrait work in any style or medium.
  • the aims are to share, learn, practise, inspire, and be inspired.
  • to make sure that the face artwork is yours, if you use any stamps or templates to build the face they should be designed by you.
  • the link is open from 10 am (BST) every Friday and stays open for a week, so link away.
  • finished pieces, works in progress or retro posts (i.e. older works, not from this week) are all welcome.
  • to link back to the link blog post here for that week.
  • Spread the word on your blog/social media outlets and use the #ShowYourFaceFriday hashtag in social media.
  • There is a prompt every other month. Using the prompts is totally optional and just there if you fancy playing along. You can still post your face work even if you haven’t used the prompt.

Looking For The Blog Button?

If you want to wear the blog button with pride then hop on over to Show Your Face 31st July 2015 to grab it and there are instructions on how to put it on your blog there too.

My Share This Week…

three quarter profile

Following on from last week’s profile for my Show Your Face share I thought I would go for a almost three quarters face. She is done with a Sakura Pigma Micron pen on a painted background. As a page I don’t think she is quite finished but I’m letting her sit for a bit to see what develops.

Over To You…

Link your faces artwork and spread the word on your blog and/or social media, hashtag #ShowYourFaceFriday. Please do let anyone you think would be interested in sharing their portraits know about our community here.
