Three watercolor abstracts by Kim Dellow

Last week I was playing with acrylic paint and brushstrokes and sharing ideas on how to get the most out of your mark making. This week I have swapped to watercolor! So let’s play with our brushstrokes and see what kind of looks we can get with this wonderful medium. I am just going to use a mop brush for my abstracts but feel free to swap it up and use what brushes you have. And I will be chatting a bit about brushes, paint and paper in this video today with some pointers to what to try out and experiment with.

Now just as a side note! After recording this I realised that not all the colors I am using came from the Decadent pies set. So the pink I am using is actually from the Tropicals set but I liked how it works with the Decadent Pies colors so put it in the tin then forgot that it was an addition from another set!

Oh and another thing that is very handy that I discovered after recording this video is a list of the pigments for the Prima Marketing Inc Confections range. You can find it at The Spin Doctor blog.

I love to watercolor doodle! I find it really relaxing for some reason. There is something about the way the water and color react together isn’t there? I just love watching it. And I thought that we could probably all do with something relaxing this week as December gets quite frantic trying to get things finished before Christmas, if you celebrate it, and also New Year too. I know I have been frantically trying to tick things off of my list so that I could take some days off over Christmas. But I have been trying so hard that I started to run out of steam, big time. So I have dialled it down a little bit. I have got almost enough finished that I can leave it for a week and pick it back up in January. But I am not quite there yet, hopefully, I will be by Friday.

So that is why we have a more relaxed and simple project video today with this watercolor doodle design. Now you might have seen it before if you follow me on Instagram. I have already posted the project but not the video to go with it. So here it is and if you want a close-up look at the water splash texture I talk about in the video then scroll on down to the picture at the bottom!

Do you use Inktense Blocks? They are like the pencil but in a block form, like a pastel. You can get some fun effects with Inktense Blocks and I thought that I would do my whole page today using them to add some color. VIDEO: Easy Gelatos Background – Watercolor Techniques

I’ve got a little bit of watercolor fun with this lovely Gelatos background for you today! You can use Gelatos, and your other watersoluble crayons, in so many ways and I thought I would make this background by using water on the Gelatos directly, and I use several techniques to do this. So have fun watching me make a mess! Sorry – not a mess! A gorgeous Gelatos background of course!

I’m using one of my own digital stamps, it’s a Dahlia, I mean it was just so much fun using my new Patreon download that I thought I would print out one of my Etsy shop flowers, I haven’t used them in a while, so it was nice to play with them again!

I’ve been using a Sennelier Aqua mini watercolor set with my favourite colors in it as my travel palette for a couple of years now. It’s ok but it does have some flaws. But then recently I found a new palette and I thought I would share it with you plus how I have hacked it, in case you are also looking for that perfect, dinky little watercolor travel set. VIDEO: Easy Watercoloring Technique For Working On Non-Watercolor Paper

You know that I love watercolors don’t you? But sometimes I don’t actually use them on watercolor paper. When I am making cards I tend to use a smooth, heavy weight, ordinary cardstock which is totally not a watercolor paper! But I love using it because it is a lovely bright white and you can get some really interesting effects, textures and looks using watercolors on it. So my video today gives you an easy watercoloring technique and some pointers on how to use your watercolors on non-watercolor paper and I hope it will encourage you to try the cardstocks that you probably already have in your stash.

It is the same technique that I used for my shaped-edge article in the latest issue of Papercraft Essentials, issue 160. So check that out if you want to see how to add shaped edges to your cardmaking techniques tool kit! Oh and there is a lovely free stamp and coordinating die set and an ink pad too on the cover of this one, so you probably really want to get the mag for that! The technique is just a bonus! ;D

I hope that has inspired you to try the cardstock you have. By all means keep on using your watercolor paper! I love watercolor paper too but mastering how to use non-watercolor paper is just another technique to add to that arty tool kit!

VIDEO: Easy Gelatos Technique For Adding Color And Texture

I thought we could all do with some color! So in my Wednesday art video this week I am adding lots of color and texture using a really easy Gelatos technique. I mean, to be honest, you can try this technique with any of your colouring products, but I thought I would go full rainbow with my Gelatos and just share another way that you can use yours to add layers of interest to a piece. We often grab for lots of different products to build interesting layers in our mixed media, art journals and even card making don’t we? Sometimes you just don’t need to and just a few choice products will be fine and you can still build layers of interest.
