VIDEO: Art Journal Page Process - Simple Acrylic Paint Layers

Ok, I’ll own up! I have been on a spending spree! I have some Amsterdam acrylic paints to try out this week and following on from last Sunday, when I was putting the Pebeo Irridescent paints through their paces, it is starting to look like I might have gone a bit acrylic paint-crazeeee! Mmm? Perhaps I have?!

But I wanted to branch out a little and try some of the student-grade and craft-grade paints. For one thing they are cheaper than the artist-grade paints that I use a lot of and let’s face it they just seem to be getting better and better don’t they? So I have to say I am super-impressed with the Amsterdam Standard range so far. I’ve been using them for the last couple of weeks or so and you will have spotted them in my Instagram Stories and even in my recent dragonfly art journal page video. I think I will be using these a lot.

So today is an art journal page process video using this lovely stamp from Trish Latimer’s Wordgirl collection and I’m sharing some really simple tips for building up and adding texture with acrylic paint layers. Don’t forget to scroll down for a close-up of the page and links to the videos that I mention in this video.

If you missed it catch up with my 12 Tips For Starting an Art Journal Page using Acrylic Paint video for some more inspiration for using palate knifes and acrylic paint.

I have two stamp carving videos, the first one goes through my favorite stamp carving products to use plus an idea for if you don’t want to buy products but you do want to have a go at the technique! The second video goes through a stamp curve project from start to finish.

Then if you are looking for some pencil colouring tips try my Prismacolor pencils coloring video.

I’m starting to get quite a back catalogue of videos! I hope they are helpful to you.

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2018 and a new creative year for us all. To kick off this creative year I have another in my art journal page process videos showcasing the ‘what happened next’ story for one of the pages that I started in the 12 Tips For Starting Art Journal Pages Using Acrylic paint video. This was the page that had the old book page inclusions so you can see what happened to it!

This is now the fourth page in this series and I’ve put the links to the other project videos at the end of the blog post, in case you missed them or wanted to refresh your memory.

VIDEO: How To Make A Winter Texture Art Journal Page

How To Make A Winter Texture Art Journal Page with a video by Kim Dellow

Is it snowing where you are? Well, it is definitely snowing in my art journal today! I have a little Winter texture art journal page inspiration for you and a technique for making a nice DIY snowy scene that you can use as a backdrop for something else or as it is to make lovely abstract Winter art. I’ve used a textured gel for my scene to give it a really frosty feel but you could easily use other gels, mediums, pastes to make your project.

As always you can find the products that I used below and a close-up of the Winter texture in a photograph near the bottom of the post so just scroll down!

Art journal Page Process - Tags and Hearts with a video by Kim Dellow

Do you think you will get to do some art today? I know! It’s Christmas Eve and there is lots of cooking and wine drinking that needs to be done! So maybe not, but in case you do, or in case you need a quick art infusion to inspire you I have another ‘what happened next’ art journal page process video for one of those starter pages from my ’12 Tips For Starting Art Journal Pages Using Acrylic paint’ video. Now this time I am purposely making two individual but coordinated pages, so you can see how they develop.

I’m also using a few different design tricks to bring these pages together, so let me know which ones you spot and which ones you find yourself using in your pages. Scroll down to see the close-up of the swirly left-hand page below the video and supplies list!

VIDEO: Art Journal Process – Swirl And Flourish

Art Journal Process - Swirl And Flourish with a video by Kim Dellow

My share today is an art journal page process video and as promised it is another continuing story for a page that I started in the 12 Tips For Starting Art Journal Pages Using Acrylic Paint video. Don’t forget to watch that first, if you missed it, so that you can see how this page began!  There is a lot of painted texture on this starter page so I have done my best to make good use of it and picked techniques and colors to enhance it. But you can see all the steps in the video!

Oh and you might also spot that I made good use of the paper that I tested out that DIY carrot roller stamp on from the My Favourite DIY Stamp Carving Materials video! I’ve put a close up of the two parts of this project below the video and of course you will find the product list below the video too.

VIDEO: Acrylic Paint Glazing And Tinted Gels and Paint Art Journal Page

Acrylic glazing art journal page by Kim Dellow. There is a video tutorial too!

I’ve been playing with acrylic glazing liquid this week and for my video tutorial I’ve used glazing in a way you might not be used to seeing it being used. Usually glazing is used in the latter stages of a painting project to shift the colour of a piece or unify and harmonise it. In my art journal page I’ve used it early on in the process to bring my tinted gel and paint stencil element together with the some old book page texture. I’ve also used it as a base to add more colour to. You can see all about it in the video and see how this page started too.

It kind of looks Autumnal doesn’t it? But it was never my intention to make an Autumnal art journal page but the start of the new season here in the UK must have had a bigger influence on me than I had thought! Do you find the seasons influencing your art when you least expect it? What seasonal projects have you been doing this week?

If you are wondering, the stencil is actually one I made myself and those of you that have popped into my blog or YouTube channel before would have seen it a few times. But if you haven’t then you can find out how I made it in my Moroccan tile blog post.

VIDEO: Easy Art Journal Page: Mandala Art

Easy art journal page with Mandala art and a video by Kim Dellow

After last week’s adventure into vlogging I am safely back with an art journal share for my video this week and an Easy Art Journal Page layout using Mandala art. You will want to watch the video all the way through as I have a top tip to help you to bring your journal pages together.

Last Thursday I started a few pages with some random additions of layers of acrylic paint, you can spot them in the vlog if you watch it. Adding layers of acrylic paint quickly and without thinking too much about it is a great way to just get started. Particularly when you have no actual finished journal page idea in your head to work towards.

This is one of those random pages but I didn’t finish it on Thursday and I am quite glad that I didn’t as I don’t think I would have done this particular design that day. It came from nowhere on Saturday when I filmed a few more pages. But it makes you think, what design would it have been if I had finished it on Thursday?! We will never know.

Distress Oxide Ink Pastel Art journal page: A video by Kim Dellow

Yay! New video time! And this week I thought I would break out some Distress Oxide inks. What do you think about  these inks? Have you tried them? Are you a fan or a ‘whatevs.’?! I know, I am a bit late to the whole Distress Oxide party, as they came out, what six months ago? But, hey, better late than never, right?

Oh and talking about being late, I’m sorry that today’s post is later than usual, I had some technical hitches uploading my video, Zoinks! But it is here and in it I am sharing an art journal page with a great technique for building layers full of that yummy dot, spot and splatter texture that Distress Oxides seem just perfect for.

I’ve gone for a pastel color combination with my three Distress Oxide ink pads and I am working in my junk journals again, and if you haven’t seen what I use for Junk Journals yet then I do have a video all about them!

VIDEO: Try This Easy Way To Add Texture To An Art Journal Page

Try this technique for adding texture to art journals. Video by Kim Dellow

Yay! It is video time and I have a new video on my YouTube Channel! This week it is all about texture, with a super easy technique for adding texture to an art journal page, mixed media or painting project and how to really make the most of that texture as you add to the page layer by layer. I’m also sharing some fun techniques for making the most out of your colouring materials like a simple method for tinting gesso with your crayons like the Faber-Castell Gelatos and a heads-up on a great gold paint that is actually sparkly like the metal itself.

This is one of my organic pages today and I had no plan for it when I started out, however, I was inspired on how to finish it by Julie Kirk from ‘Notes On Paper‘ and her lovely book ‘Snipped Tales‘, which makes me smile every time I dip into it and is worth checking out if you enjoy the art of mini-story telling!

My little abstract, ephemera story says:

‘Beautiful living creature about to speak,
take care of the mountain,
as it is belonging to me.’

I thought it was cute and I hope it sparks your own story around words. Let me know what it makes you think of in the comments!

Finally, before I go I just wanted to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who has subscribed to my YouTube Channel or even if you aren’t a subscriber but still watch my videos regularly. I really do appreciate it, it is amazing the response I have been getting and I am so glad you are enjoying them! I am quite surprised that I have doubled my subscription number and increased my watch time considerably since January. So really, a huge THANK YOU!

I am just over 110 people away from my 1000 subscribers milestone so I was wondering if I should do something special to mark it? Do you have any ideas on what you might like for the 1000 subscriber video? Let me know if you do!

And as always share any work you are inspired to make from my creative shares and videos by linking me up to it in social media as I would love to see it!

Kim
