My Share This Week…

Back to some more detailed face work from me this week after my last couple of stylised face doodles shares for Show Your Face. I had a bit of time whilst listening to some business webiners to practice my shading.  My main focus was on the negative and positive space and trying to capture that with my pencil work and shading. These are all areas I want to practice more so I’m pleased I spent a little bit of time on it this week. I like how the nose turned out.

If you want to try this it works really well if you use a photo of a face that has a lot of light contrasts in it. Often this needs the model to be lit strongly from one direction. It isn’t easy to get photos like this as we often see faces with uniform lighting that is designed to limit shadow contrasts. The best possible way is to use photos you have taken yourself and start collecting a catalogue of face photos that you can use in your art. It also means that you will have no copyright issues as the photos were taken by you.

So when you next take a portrait photo or even if you are taking a family photo, have a think about the lighting and get a couple of shots in, if you can, where there is a really strong light coming from one direction, such as from a window, to cast shadows over part of the subjects’ face.

I did kind of enjoy this process, so what about you guys? What have you been up to with your faces this week and do you have any shading tips to share?

Over To You…

Fabulous shading, Kim! I agree with you – the nose turned out brilliantly, but the eye is fantastic too! This is a sketch to be proud of. I've just started compiling a collection of images of my family and it is really a useful resource. Thank you so much for all your work on 'Show Your Face'. xx

Wow fabulous shading Kim- for me shading with the pencil is too boring… I don't like it very much although I know that it is so good to get practise…
Thank you for hosting this nice event again and a happy weekend to you!

I am working on this very same thing. Just concentrating on dark and light as much as I can. You have to look at it in a whole new way. This is wonderful!

Thanks for the wonderful inspiration and for hosting a fun place to share 🙂

You're right, without shadow we are limited, although when drawing I often feel the best bits are those pieces of paper I didn't draw on 🙂 typically the two spots of light in the eye which bring your excellent drawing to life.
